Northern Forest Canoe Trail #4: Islands and Farms: Vermont - Lake Champlain to Missisquoi River

The 740-mile water trail links the watersheds of northern New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire, and Maine, following Native American travel routes through the rivers of this region.

This section of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail crosses the famous Lake Champlain, the nation's sixth largest lake and the scene of many naval battles from the American Revolution and French and Indian Wars, including the sinking of Benedict Arnold's ship (since recovered) and many other shipwrecks. You'll paddle through farm lands and past vineyards, having many small-town options for a lunch or overnight stay. Birdwatchers will enjoy the 6600-acre Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge and a stop at the Abenaki Tribal Museum in Swanton is a great way to learn about the native heritage of this region.
