In 1873, Levi Strauss and Nevada tailor Jacob Davis patented the process of putting rivets in pants for strength, and the world's first jeans, Levi's® jeans, then called "waist overalls," were born. In 1897, Strauss donated money for scholarships at Berkeley where half of the recipients were women. Since then, the company has led the way in offering HIV/AIDS education for its employees, has won awards for its portrayal of disabled individuals in ad campaigns, and has launched initiatives aimed to stamp out racism in America.
