Records show that as far back as 1774, the Birkenstocks of Germany were making shoes. Sometime around the turn of the century, the family began experimenting with a contoured insole, assuming a shoe that fit the shape of our foot would only be more comfortable than the norm. The idea was a hit and the Birkenstock® arch support was born. Throughout the 30s, 40s, and 50s, the arch supports were exported to countries such as Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, with medical specialists touting the benefits of the Birkenstock system.

In the early 60s, however, a Birkenstock descendent decided to take the arch support concept one step further — as a shoe. The Birkenstock sandal sees the light of day for the first time! Once the Arizona style is introduced in the 1970s, the Birkenstock becomes a household name. Its popularity explodes throughout the 70s and 80s.

The rest, as they say, is history. Birkenstock sandals have become synonymous the world over with comfort and fun-loving style. And with over 300 style/color combinations, there's bound to be a Birkenstock for you!
