Penn Squall Star Drag Saltwater Conventional Reel

Penn Squall Star Drag Saltwater Conventional Reel

Penn® Star Drag Reels are built for the rigors of saltwater fishing. The open top design is perfect for jigging, casting baits or lures, surf fishing and some trolling applications. The drag pressure is adjusted by adjusting the star drag located at the base of the handle.

The Squall is designed from a lightweight graphite frame and is outfitted with a free-floating spool due to the Live Spindle™ design for exceptional casting performance.

The revolutionary Live Spindle design ensures exceptional casting performance. The improved configuration allows the spool to spin independently of the spindle and pinion gear, which significantly reduces friction experienced from the extreme acceleration of the spool when casting. Additionally the Live Spindle improves the retrieve of the reel because the spindle and pinion do not need to turn relative to each other during heavy loads.

By rearranging the sequence of the keyed metal washers and eared HT-100™ washer,s the reel can be set up for fishing a wide range of drag settings without additional parts.

Line capacity rings eliminate the question of how much line you have left when fighting a fish. The three lines on the spool flange let you know when you have 1/3, 2/3, or a full spool of line. Also if you respool often these lines find you a benchmark for backing your superlines with monofilament which will help eliminate wasted time and line.

In 1922, Otto Henze left Germany at age 25 and emigrated to the United States, starting Penn Fishing Tackle Manufacturing Company® in Philadelphia soon thereafter. In 1932, he designed the Mod F and the Mod K reels and began selling them to the general public in 1933.

The company's growth in the early thirties was dramatic, especially considering that America was at the height of the depression. Tough times proved to be an advantage for the start-up company, since many people fished for their food. Penn's affordable reels were just what men needed to put food on the table, day after day. In 1936, Penn introduced its most famous reel to this day, the "Senator."

Throughout the early years, Penn reels were used by such well-known and prestigious fisherman as Zane Gray and Ernest Hemingway and have been used in years since to set numerous world records.

The company's commitment to quality products designed for the world's most favorite pastime is evident in today's product range, encompassing salt and freshwater rods and reels, line, and fishing accessories.
