Northern Forest Canoe Trail #8: Rangeley Lakes Region: Maine - Umbagog Lake to Rangeley Lake

The 740-mile water trail links the watersheds of northern New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire, and Maine, following Native American travel routes through the rivers of this region.

This playground of large connected lakes (Rangeley, Mooselookmeguntic, the Richardsons and Umbagog) has been popular for fishing since mid-1800s, hitting its heyday of grand hotels, steamships and railroads in 1920s. Wildlife lovers will especially enjoy the Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, a renowned birdwatching area on the New Hampshire/Maine border where you'll see bald eagles, loons, peregrine falcons, ospreys and more.
